cal ripken's mother. the jackson family drama takes another turn. what katherine jackson has to say about the allegations she was abducted. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm richard jordan in for jim handly. we're going to starred with this extreme heat. this is a live look. we are looking at the possibility of storms headed our way. chief meteorologist doug kammerer is monitoring the skies from the storm center. >> we are talking about temperatures approaches 100 degrees. currently 98 at the airport. it took a little while this morning with cloud cover, but once the sun came out, we saw them skyrocket. wait until you see the heat index. let's show you what's happening. current temperature now sitting at 98 here, but 99 back toward leesburg, 99 in manassas, 97 in fredericksburg and 98 in la

plata. one against that big issue being the heat index. that's what we'll continue to see as we make our way through the rest of the evening. heat index of 106 at the airport. 110 in la plata, 114 in leesburg and 107 in culpepper. something else we're watching. we have that heat advisory in effect for almost the entire area. but notice to the north and west, here's washington. notice all of these storms back to the north and west. severe thunderstorm watch up for the entire state of pennsylvania. no severe thunderstorm watch here just yet, but the prediction center in norman, oklahoma, taking a look at our area, they may issue a watch later on, but there are big-time storms to our north and west, including tornadoes on the ground in portions of pennsylvania right now. i don't think we'll see that here. for us the biggest threat will be extremely heavy winds and the

potential for dangerous lightning. we'll talk much more about how long this heat sticks around and coming up in just a couple minutes. even in the heat, redskins fans show the up to see what could be the start of something great. this is the first day of training camp, and first time to see robert griffin iii. fans showed up hours before the gates open at noon, carry water and sunscreen to get through the gay, but the heisman trophy winner known as rg3 is there. this just into our newsroom. we are getting our first pictures of the suspect. they show the man who police say held violet ripken at gunpoint in her garage. they say he tied her up, blindfolded her and drove her around for several hours.

now to a nationwide crackdown on synthetic drugs, known as bath salts. they were readily available, but they culls be very deadly. there's even has been a big surge in the misuse of. federal officials hope today's action will help bring an end to all of that. >> the national crandown on synthetic marijuana and other designer drugs is called "operation logjam" and it's been huge. from florida to new york, kansas and beyond, drug enforcement acts have arrested at least 90 people, confiscated more than $36 million in cash, and seized millions of these packets that look very much like something that would pique the interest of a young person. >> these are deceptively marketed as bath salts and spice and incense, and even marketed

as plant food. >> so-called bath salts are snorted or swallowed. >> i have treated them in the emergency department and have seen this type of behavior, this extreme paranoia, almost superhoop strengths where they can break through handcuffs. >> reporter: they're sold on online, but also in convenience stores. >> there were stern words for anyone selling the items. >> you are nothing more than a drug trafficker, and we will bring you to justice. >> reporter: president obama signed a bill into law earlier this month banning the most common synthetic drugs. erica edwards, nbc news. new developments in the penn state sex abuse scandal. the man who claims to be the unknown victim number two now plans to sue the university. he accused gerry sandusky of molesting him in a shower stall in 2001. details of that abuse played a

pivotal role on the conviction of 45 sex abuse counts last month. according to the attorney, he's suing the school for facilitating the abuse. the university said it cannot comment on pending litigation. tonight we're getting a look at james holmes long before the mass shooting at that colorado movie theater. this video shows holmes giving a video presentation at a science tamp in 2006. nbc news has confirmed that holmes mailed the plans, investigators say the package arrived earlier this month, but still was in the mail democrat room. a new release day for a movie with an eerie similarity to the events. "gangster squad" was pushed back from september to january. it's about a 1940s era battle between los angeles police and mobs terres, starring sean penn and ryan gosling.

it fae turs a scene where gangster shoot up a movie theater. no word yet if the scene will be shot or edited, but the trailer has been pulled from theaters. the candidates for the race for the white house are pushing agendas on both sides of the atlantic. president obama is here in washington, urging republicans to pass the tax cut bill, while mitt romney is campaigning in england. as jennifer johnson reports, both leaders seemed to ruffle a few feathers along the way. mitt romney met with david cameron today. his trip got off to a shaky start after telling brian williams he found britain's olympic preparations disconcerting. >> the stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials. >> reporter: that didn't sit well with the brits. >> what i have seen shows

imagination and forethought, and a lot of organization, and i expect the games to be highly successful. >> reporter: across the ponds the waters are turbulent. president obama is pushing republicans to pass the tax cut bill. >> we need 218 votes in the house of representatives, 281 votes to make sure that 98% of americans don't see their taxes go up next year. >> reporter: but republicans told the president they won't raise anyone's taxes. >> if you want to show that you stand with american small business owners, the best thing to do is drop your plan to nick their taxes on january 1st. >> reporter: democrats accused the republicans of misleading taxpayers. >> they sold the country a fable, that if a democrat tried to take away tax breaks for the wealthy, then middle class taxes would rise as well. that has always been a lie, and our vote on our bill yesterday exposed it as a lie.

it's been hot, but we are handling it. >> it started off fairly night this morning. we had some cloud cover through about 10:00. once the sun came out, boom! the temperatures went way up. right now we're sitting at 98 degrees, but the heat index, that's the big story out there. we'll show you what's happening across our area. mostly sun,skies, as the planes fly by the monument this afternoon. that sunshine just continues to sit and bake our region. 98 degrees the current temperature out there at the airport with the winds out of the south at 13 miles an hour. we were talking about this last night. that southerly component bringing up the dew point. dew point at 71 degrees. so that adds to the humidity, and that, of course, creates the high heat index. 99 in lease during, 99 in manassas, 97 in fredericksburg,

but that's not the way it feels. this is the way it feels out there. take a like. 106 washington, 110 in la plata, 109 in manassas, 107 in fredericksburg, and 107 down towards patuxent river. and all we need is a trigger to get some thunderstorms developing. we have the heat. that's why we have the advisory still in effect between 105 and 110. it includes just about everybody, but once again we need a focal point to kick off some storms. right now we don't have it as we widen out here, we'll show you, there's severe thunderstorm warnings to or left, to our north, but no watches even for us around our region. this is an area of big-time severe weather. there have already been numerous reports of wind damage, a couple tornadoes reported, and just look at the thunder and

lightning. the lightning really prominent. this line is moving down our way. this extends from new york all the way back in towards part of the missouri area, around st. louis, so this line will make its way through us eventually. will it hold together? that is the big key. right now -- right now i think it's going to try to hold together, the best chance for severe weather will be north and west of washington throughout the evening. then tomorrow the frontal boundary will move across and stall out. that means another hot day tomorrow, alternates on the humid side. heed index about 100, the actual temperature in the mid 90s, but a good chance for strong showers and thunderstorms. saturday looks like we'll see temperatures in the low 90s with a good chance of showers and storms, too. this evening, partly cloudy, hot and very muggy. isolated storms possibly developing. 88 to about 93. then tomorrow morning, waking up to very muggy conditions, low temperature only around 79.

"twilight" actress kristen stewart says she's sorry for cheating on robert pattinson, but has she lost the man she calls the most important thing in her life? welcome back to "news4 at 4." i'm pat lawson muse, and i'm richard jordan in for jim handly. they've been dating for three years and recently photographed. but following the public apology, the relationship cook on the rocks. hoda kotb has a look at the cheating scandal involving a married man. >> reporter: robert pattinson and kristen stewart had a fairytale romance both on the

silver screen -- >> i do. >> i do. >> reporter: and off, but on tuesday, "us weekly" revealed photographs of her in a close embrace with her snow white and the huntsman director rupert sanders. >> there's pictures of them kissing, making out in the car, so it's something she couldn't deny. >> she has this untameable squabble. >> reporter: sanders is 41-year-old. stewart is 22. he's married to liberty ross, who starred alongside stewart playing snow white's mother. the couple has two young children. >> you have to tell me what you're thinking. >> reporter: pattinson and stewart met while making the first twilight movie and have been dating three years. >> they were getting very serious, apparently talking about babies, living together. they kept it so low key, slowly introduced their relationship to the world, which is why this is

an even bigger shock. >> reporter: on wednesday, stewart issued a public apology. i'm deemly sorry for the hurt and embarrassment i've caused for everyone this has affected. this moment tear indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person i love and respect the most, rob. i love him. i love him. i'm so sorry. not long after sanders released an apology to his family. i'm utterly distraught about the pain i caused my family, my beautiful wife and heavenly children are all i have in this world. i love them with all my heart. i'm praying we can get through this together. after the story broke, sanders's wife brought one word -- without. she's since deleted her twitter account. robert pattinson has yet to comment, but recently he said there's one thing, i've never understood, why people cheat. >> "people" reports that robert

pattinson has moved out of the home he shared with stewart in los angeles. just days after the mass shooting in colorado, two incidents at a theater near pittsburgh put movie-goers on edge and send patrons running. in one incident an all-out brawl broke out. this surveillance video showing what's happening. a woman then pouring a drink on him. this all parent followed a dispute over a bathroom stall. in a separate incident, an argument broke out between two women attending the showing, someone yelled "bomb" movie-goers scrambled out and ran toward the accident. one person was charged with assault in connection with these order deals. divider users are not happy today. one day before the website is expecting one of the busiest days ever, the system crashed for millions around the world. twitter said engineers were working on the problem, but didn't reveal the issue. twitter was working again by the

afternoon. the olympics are expected to bring an unprecedented amount of traffic to the site, starting with the opening ceremony tomorrow night. the ymca has a new breastfeeding policy, all thanks to some action by outraged moms in north carolina. about a dozen women held a nursing-in act. thurp yet set bay a worker asked a mother to stop nursing her baby at the center. the y says it will now provide a comfortable environment for breastfeeding mothers. >> we're thankful that the nursing mothers were able to bring this to our attention. we realize we had some inconsistencies in some of our nursing policies, so it's really helped us to be able to look at those across all of our branches. >> this is an important issue, and it's good they're handling it this way. hopefully this will be the start of something really great for breast 2k7 feeding women. >> there would be a national breastfeeding event here in washington, august 4th on the

number, it will be the eighth time this summer that we've hit 100 degrees. that is second on the all-time list of 100-degree days or 100-degree days per year. we had 11 of those, that's a record. we only need three more and we're only halfway through the summer. could it happen? it's possible. out there still very hot and humid. 98 degrees. that was the temperature at the top of the hour at the airport. so i'm waiting to see what the 5:00 number's going to be. that heat index, it's on the warm side. currently sitting at 100 in rockville. look at our friends in warrenton, always the hot spot here. waffle the heat index here. that says 125, i don't think that's quite right, but it is very warm and humid. 117 in huntington, 110 in rockville, 106 in ft. belvoir. we're talking about an extremely

hot day outside. storm radar, no rain to talk about right now. you notice that our radar is all clear, but notice to the north here. these are the pinks. watch this. this is a severe thunderstorm watching in effect from around the boston area, all the way back to the west to around st. louis, that's the line of severe weather making its way across parts of the ohio valley and parts of pennsylvania. the entire state of pennsylvania under a severe thunderstorm watch. take a look at all of the warnings here, even the rumsfeld boxes. these red boxes, tornado warnings. we've had reports of attorneys on the ground and damage reports, one of up around elmyra, new york. so we're going to watch this very closely. once again, no watch for us, but the prediction center thinking they may put up a watch for our area. best chance of storms will

be to the north overnight, maybe frederick over towards baltimore, best chance of storms there. low temperature around 79 in washington, 75 in leesburg, about 74 in manassas tonight. a very warm and muggy night. tomorrow, we warm back up. not quite as hot as today, but 95 is what i'm going for. 96 in la plata. blue that heed index above 100 degrees in many locations. if we see more sunshine tomorrow, we may get warmer. right now i think we'll see plenty of cloud cover, and a better chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day tomorrow. here's the next four days showing that high of 95. a 91-degree day on saturday. a pretty good chance of showers and storms, 90 on your sunday, and then it gets a little unsettled, a little trough moves in over the mid-atlantic coast. that's good news for us. that means a pretty good chance
